We recently attended The Builders’ Association’s Safety Excellence Awards Program Breakfast in March. Let’s explore why we attended this safety event, and why roof safety is so important overall.
Qualifications to Attend These Safety Awards
We had to apply to attend this safety event, since it was an awards breakfast. A panel of judges had to decide which roofing contractors had safety programs worthy of The Builders’ Association’s standards. So how did we make the cut? We submitted an application packet that first detailed our 100-year history, the range of industries we work with, and our roof technicians’ qualifications and workmanship. Then we described our safety program in detail.
What does our safety program include? It includes having all new hires take OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 courses so they understand the basics of roof safety. We also have all our foreman and lead men complete First Aid and CPR classes so they can respond to any relevant medical problems that occur onsite during a project. Additionally, we have our project managers fill out safety inspection reports so we have documentation of how our safety practices are applied onsite. Finally, we have daily and monthly safety meetings where we discuss safety topics with our employees and let them know when they’ve adhered to our safety practices during their current projects. Overall, our safety program keeps our employees aware of roof safety’s importance at all times.
Why is Roof Safety So Important?
Roof safety is important because the presence of safety measures and practices can save people’s lives. The guest speaker at this event highlighted that fact. The speaker, Regina McMichael, devoted her life to roofing safety after she lost her husband in a roofing accident when she was just 20 years old. After experiencing that tragedy, she devoted her life to improving roof safety measures for contractors. She even helped write the OSHA fall protection procedure that would have saved her husband’s life if it had existed at the time of his fall. Listening to her reiterated for us how important and necessary roof safety measures and practices are.
Why Should Your Roofing Contractor Attend Safety Events?
