In May 2011, one of the worst tornados in United States history rolled through Joplin, MO causing devastating death and destruction. A month before the horrific Joplin storm, St. Louis was also a recipient of a tornado which damaged over 2,000 homes of which 250 were beyond repair. And it was not just private residences affected, 35 St. Louis businesses suffered significant structural damage including the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. To date, the total damage to Joplin is still being accessed.
The Midwest carries a reputation for tornadoes, and St. Louis, MO lies in what is known as tornado alley. This past series of tornados created a category EF4 tornado more powerful than any in the past 44 years in Missouri. Thankfully, early warnings, good timing, and common sense allowed the storm to pass St. Louis without any deaths. Unfortunately, Joplin was not as lucky and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims.
Strong storms and tornados create winds ranging from 40 miles per hour to gusts reaching as high as 200 miles per hour. Recently, the Midwest and southern states have seen a series of tornadoes in what has been a tumultuous season. Annually, it is estimated that 900 to 1,400 tornados occur in the United States.
