Built-Up Roofing is one of the oldest and most reliable methods for installing a new roof, and it’s also one of the most economical roofing methods available today.
Built-Up Roofing (or B.U.R. as it is sometimes called) is made by layering several plies of roof felts (strength) with bitumen (waterproofing) in between, creating a laminating effect. The layers of bitumen and alternating roof felts (made of bitumen-saturated Fiberglass, polyester, other fabrics) combine to form a watertight barrier that exhibits exceptional heat-resistance, as well as opposition to extreme wind.
Built-Up Roofs are ideal for flat or nearly flat surfaces, and can be installed over most roof decks, provided the proper substrates are being used. That includes wood (with a rosin sheet and base sheet needed first), steel (a minimum of 22 gauge), structural concrete, and cement fiber (with a base sheet or mechanically-attached insulation). BUR roof systems can be used with all the available roof insulation in any thickness to provide exceptional energy efficiency and long term waterproofing.
Built-Up Roofs vary with regard to service life, depending on geography, foot traffic, materials and number of plies used, but can last up to 25 to 30 years under ideal conditions. That makes them one of the most economical roofing methods available, when compared to other methods on a cost-per-year basis.
At Kirberg, we’ve been performing Built-Up Roofing installations for over four generations.
